6 Ways to Avoid Dry Eyes

There’s nothing pleasant about suffering from dry eyes. You are constantly itchy and sometimes no amount of eye drops seems to soothe.

An estimated 4.88 million Americans over the age of 50 suffer from dry eyes. The condition affects twice as many women as men because of hormone fluctuations. Those suffering from diabetes or who wear contact lenses are also at an increased risk of developing dry eyes.

While some medications can cause dry eyes -- such as sleeping pills, drugs for high blood pressure, antihistamines, and those needed to treat anxiety -- there are some everyday habits that can contribute to the condition. And often, minor adjustments in how we compensate for these habits and learn how to tone them down, can alleviate the discomfort of chronic dry eyes.

Here, according to Healthline, are the six most common:

1. Smoking. Cigarette smoking can irritate your eyes because the tobacco smoke breaks down the protective, oily layer of tears that cover the eye. Even exposure to secondhand smoke can lead to dry eyes.

2. Blow drying your hair. Try letting your hair air dry naturally as much as possible before using a blow dryer. Experts suggest just drying the roots to avoid excess warm air hitting your eyes and causing moisture to evaporate.

3. Avoid extreme temperatures and windy conditions. According to an abstract published in “Biochemistry and Molecular Biology,” very low or very high temps, high wind and low humidity aggravate dry eye. The study authors note that incidence increases in arid or semiarid climates or in high latitudes. Avoiding ceiling fans in your bedroom can also help prevent dry eyes.

4. Spending too much time in front of a computer. We tend to blink less when we stare at a computer screen which decreases the amount of natural protection our eyelids provide. The glare from the screen can also affect our vision. Experts recommend purposely blinking while you are working at a computer and taking a break every 15 minutes or so to stare at an object in the distance. Apply eye drops frequently.

5. Use warm compresses. Apply a warm washcloth to your eyelids to help release natural lubricants that may soothe dry eyes. Apply for 5 minutes, three times a day or when needed.

6. Try an omega-3 fatty acid supplement. Many people report relief when taking an omega-3 supplement or augmenting their intake of fatty fish such as salmon and sardines.
