Stomach Bugs May Protect Against Arthritis

Stomach or urinary tract infections may protect against rheumatoid arthritis, a new study finds.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder that typically affects the small joints in the hands and feet, causing painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity. An inflammatory disorder, it also hikes heart disease risk.

Previous studies have found that infections may offer such protection, so Swedish researchers decided to determine which types might offer this benefit against RA.

They found that people who reported having gastroenteritis (stomach and intestinal infections) were 29 percent less likely to have arthritis. Those who had suffered urinary infections were 22 percent less likely to have RA. In contrast, there was no association with any respiratory infection, such as sinusitis, tonsillitis, or pneumonia.

The results indicate that infections in general do not affect the risk for RA, but that certain infections, hypothetically associated with changes in the gut microbiome, could diminish the risk,” the authors wrote in the study, which was published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases.
