Walmart has expanded its COVID-19 vaccination program to include 43 new drive-thru locations in 18 states. The retail giant will also offer in-store shots and at several off-site locations.

According to Eat This, Not That!, Walmart wants to help reach vulnerable populations in “pharmacy deserts” who may not have access to medical services. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has agreed to provide the company with the vaccine supply needed to ensure its efforts.

A recent analysis by the Rural Policy Research Institute found that 111 rural communities between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains have no pharmacy that can give vaccines, according to Kaiser Health News. This could leave thousands of Americans struggling to get a vaccine to end the pandemic.

“We have two goals as we administer vaccines: first, to reach as many people as possible to enable reopening efforts, and second, to ensure equitable vaccine distribution across the communities we serve,” said Dr. Cheryl Pegus, Walmart’s executive vice president of Health & Wellness.

A Walmart corporate news release explained that the company selected the new locations after analyzing the demographics, local health needs, and gaps in critical access to medical services of each area in order to make the most impact for vulnerable populations.

“We will continue to engage within our communities to find new ways to reach additional customers with our vaccination programs as we work towards the eventual end of the pandemic,” said Pegus.

According to Market Watch, President Joe Biden promised to make sure there are vaccination centers in communities hit hardest by the pandemic, such as Black and Latino communities, as well as those in rural areas.

But early data shows that Black Americans who have been dying of COVID-19 at greater rates than their white counterparts are getting vaccinated at lower rates.
