Supplements That Boost Immunity

All supplements that are immune boosters are good for you, and I strongly recommend taking them. Although a lot of the medical literature debates the benefits of supplements, my 30 years of medical practice strongly supports taking them.

I like the following supplements to prevent the flu and colds:

Vitamin C: Researcher Linus Pauling, who received a Nobel Prize for his work on vitamin C, took up to 25 grams a day and lived well into his 90s. You and your stomach decide how much is too much. I typically recommend 1,000 mg/ three times a day with food. Your body will let you know its limit; too much vitamin C will likely give you diarrhea.

Lactoferrin: This is a protein your body makes to improve immune function and eliminate unhealthy bacteria and viruses from the gut. It is a great supplement, but it might be hard to find at your local health food store. I use 600 mg/twice a day for a minimum of five days at the first sign of a cold and recommend the same for my patients.

Vitamin B complex: All the B vitamins are great at improving immune function, so don’t miss out on them, especially if your diet is low in animal meat. I recommend 100 mg/once a day.

Omega-3 and 6 fish oils: Don’t skip these fish oils, especially in winter. They are great antioxidants and immune boosters, and are easier going down than that awful cod liver oil my mother gave me during the cold and dreary winter months when I was a kid. I recommend 3,000 mg/once a day.

Elderberry extract: This is an amazing plant used as an ingredient in lozenges that will have you feeling better for at least 30 minutes after you have sucked them dry. I take them every time I give a talk or have to travel and don’t feel so great.

Probiotics: These supplements encourage the growth of healthy bacteria in your gut and are great immune boosters. They are very important when you take antibiotics but also in times of emotional and physical stress, so never leave home without them.
