Countless Ways to Drop Excess Pounds

Tuesday, 24 Jun 2014 07:59 AM

Fats Domino, Fatty Arbuckle, Minnesota Fats - it used to be easy to name the remarkably overweight. But now, according to the Global Burden of Disease Study, there are 2.1 billion overweight and obese people in the world! And guess who leads the way, with 13 percent of those folks (that's 273 MILLION)? The U.S., with only 5 percent of the world's population. But hey, neighbors, don't smirk: Canada, 25 percent of your adults are obese; Mexico, 70 percent of yours are overweight. So, this is a North American call to arms - and legs and feet! Time to ...

Walk this Way! Burn an extra 250 calories daily by walking 3-3.5 miles per hour for 60 minutes. You'll lose about half a pound a week!

How? Make your feet the go-to choice for getting around. In addition to a walking routine, start taking the stairs, not the elevator. Try running errands without the car (what a concept!).

Decrease exposure to fat-magnet foods and chemicals. They make it easier to gain weight and harder to lose weight.

How? Eliminate processed foods; say "au revoir" to red meat. Say "hasta la vista" to hormone-disrupting chemicals in plastics (with recycle codes 3, 6, 7), cash-register receipts, antibacterial (triclosan) cleaning products, fire retardants and pesticides.

Advocate for healthy programs. One voice can change the world!

How? Encourage schools to provide daily recess. Lobby all levels of government for recreation areas and bike/pedestrian lanes for adults and kids. And lobby yourself for change! Today is a great time to buy a pedometer and start your "Walk 10K-a-day, No Excuses" routine.
