Why Can't I Lose Weight?

By    |   Friday, 11 July 2014 01:25 PM EDT

Question: No matter what I do, I can't lose weight. I'm 55, eat a healthy diet and exercise almost every day, but still have a BMI of about 28. Is it possible I have some kind of glandular or hormonal problem?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

BMI levels of 28 and over are concerning. Glandular causes, not related to diabetes or hypothyroidism, are rare at your age (only 5 percent to 15 percent).

So it is probably a good idea for you to be checked out for hypothyroidism and Type 2 diabetes.

By far, most people who are obese are making poor diet and exercise choices, but genetic tendencies (combined with unhealthy habits) can also be a factor.
