Question: I am suffering from a strange hearing problem. I hear what sound like soft voices or wind in my ears. Could it be tinnitus or is there some connection with high blood pressure? What should I do about it?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Tinnitus is difficult to treat unless it is related to a reaction to a drug you can stop taking or an external ear-canal obstruction. Sometimes excessive ear wax, an infection, or obstruction can cause the symptoms you describe.
You should have your ear examined and your eardrum checked by a doctor or an ear, nose, and throat specialist (ENT). It would also be a good idea to have a hearing test.
In the meantime, stop taking any unnecessary medications or supplements. Even simple aspirin can cause tinnitus symptoms. But usually it results from ear damage caused by exposure to noise exposure (hypertension alone is rarely a cause).
