Is Rogaine OK for Women?

By    |   Friday, 26 June 2015 11:22 AM EDT

Question: Help, I’m losing my hair! I’m a woman (57) and work in public relations, so this is very embarrassing. Should I take Propecia or use Rogaine? Isn’t that just for men?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Rogaine has great results when used regularly. A lower concentration is approved for use in women.

Pass on the Propecia. I am not as impressed with Propecia, even for men over 40 years of age, but have seen dramatic results when used in younger men.

Many women lose hair by traction alopecia, so avoid pulling hair back excessively. Hair coloring and permanents also weaken hair, and are common causes of premature hair breakage and loss.
