Should I Get PSA Test?

Question: What’s the latest on PSA testing? I’m 55 and am trying to decide if I should have the test or not. My grandfather had it, but died from a heart attack, and no one else in my family has had it.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

PSA testing is still available for those at risk especially. Remember that we probably are better knowing about a possible malignancy than ignoring it.

I happen to believe that a PSA test can provide baseline for future readings. Some may debate this idea. In fact, federal health officials discourage routine, repeated screening using PSA testing for healthy men, noting some prostate cancers are difficult to classify as mild or aggressive. This can prompt men with slow-growing tumors to worry needlessly or seek overaggressive treatments that may do more harm than good.

But the PSA is the only reliable tool we have for identifying those cancers that are life-threatening early, when treatment is most effective.

The bottom line: the decision to screen using PSA should be made by you in consultation with your physician, who can make the best recommendation in your particular case.

Be aware that PSA elevations may occur in non-malignant disease, and some cancers do not elevate PSAs. The PSA test is not intended to be used in isolation, so your diagnosis and decision on intervals for prostate disease detection need to be discussed with your doctor.
