Can Menopause Cause Shortness of Breath?

By    |   Tuesday, 23 September 2014 10:05 AM

Question: I’ve been getting hot flashes lately and, when I do, I get short of breath. Is that a reason for concern? Is something else going on, other than menopause?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Hot flashes are a common menopausal symptom, but do not usually occur with shortness of breath. Although these symptoms may not be related, shortness of breath must always be evaluated, especially when it comes on suddenly.
It could be that you just hyperventilate when you get a hot flash. But to be sure, you need further consultation with a doctor. You should ask your physician to check to be sure your heart and lungs are not giving you early warning signs of deeper problems, such as heartbeat abnormalities or even blood clots which can cause shortness of breath.
