Question: I get stomach problems after drinking milk. Is there a test that can tell if I'm lactose intolerant?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
You have already recognized the problem: lactose. But remember that lactose also stimulates gastric acid secretion and may cause flare ups of stomach conditions, such as gastritis and ulcers.
A gastro-intestinal endoscopy evaluation can identify an underlying disorder, ulcer, or other condition that may be present that is not lactose related. Lactose intolerance generally reflects a deficiency of lactase enzyme, which the stomach uses to break down and absorb lactose in dairy products. Unfortunately oral lactase supplementation does not always help, and lactose avoidance is advised.
Testing is available for lactose intolerance, but the best way to manage it is simply to avoid milk and dairy products.
