Why Does Exercise Give Me Headaches?

By    |   Wednesday, 18 Feb 2015 10:41 AM

Question: My head hurts usually when I do my exercises. Is this a bad thing?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Exertional headaches should be discussed with your medical doctor to be sure they are not caused by an underlying health problem. Exertional headaches can be tied to medication or a hidden condition.

Primary exertional headaches are usually pulsating, often lasting from 5 minutes to 48 hours, are brought on only during or after exertion, and are not caused by an underlying disorder, drug, or medication. Serious causes of this type of headache need to be considered, especially a brain hemorrhage, aneurism, or tumor. You should seek an evaluation for hypertension, vascular or endocrine disorders.

Often exertional headaches are treated as migraine variants, and they respond well to prescription medicines.

But prevention is usually the best approach to this condition, and usually involves avoiding hot weather or high altitudes while exercising. Hydrate yourself adequately before exercise and avoid caffeine and avoid the use of stimulants. If you use supplements, consider a drug holiday to be sure you are not reacting to unknown components in your supplements.
