Is Genetic Colon Cancer Test Available?

By    |   Wednesday, 23 July 2014 01:35 PM EDT

Question: My father died from colon cancer. Is there a genetic test that can tell me if I'm likely to get the disease, too?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Yes there are genetic tests available to tell you of your likelihood of developing colon cancer, but insurance does not yet reimburse for these tests.

This form of genetic testing will likely become more commonly used soon, and may be covered by insurance in the future. Screening tests, including colonoscopy and stool testing, can also pick up early signs of colon cancer and are strongly recommended for individuals with a family history of the disease.
