Can Breast Cancer Be Treated Naturally?

Question: I was told by my doctor I have breast cancer. What should I do? He wants me to take chemo to shrink the tumors, but is there a more natural way? I am 56 years old and my mother died of breast cancer 35 years ago at 45 years old.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Breast Cancer at the age of 56 with a positive family history requires you to make some life-defining decisions — ideally without allowing the tumor growth to progress while you ponder your choices. You are young and presumably otherwise healthy. Pre-operative chemotherapy to reduce tumors is very commonly recommended, but delays in receiving your chemo may significantly affect your future results.
There is no "natural" way to manage breast cancer and immunotherapy has a very limited effectiveness in most cases. You must stop smoking, if you use tobacco products. Do not take any non-prescribed supplements when you are on chemotherapy, including all pills and liquids not specifically prescribed by your doctor.
Start your chemo now to be aggressive in treating your cancer. And while you have concerns, you should rely upon the advice of the professionals you have consulted. If you have concerns about your diagnosis, you can always request your pathology tissue and slides be reviewed by another center, such as MD Anderson or Mayo Clinic, but do not let this delay the initiation of your treatment.
Discuss surgical options with your surgeon, and understand the plan of management for your case. Remember, you can always interrupt your chemo, but a late start sometimes can never be made up for.
Go for the gold and beat this monster down. You will win with a positive attitude, and you should also seek out some external support from agencies such as the Komen Foundation or your local hospital breast cancer support group.
Remember that breast cancer treatment and successful cure rates have improved immensely over the last 35 years, when many of the currently used chemo agents were not even available. Discuss your staging with your treating physician, and understand why each recommended treatment is necessary to obtain an optimal result. Remember that advanced staging does not mean a cure is not possible. Let me know how you do.
