Physical, Mental Symptoms of Head Trauma

Dr. Small By Thursday, 03 August 2017 04:38 PM EDT Current | Bio | Archive

Head trauma victims experience a range of physical and mental symptoms immediately following the injury and sometimes for long periods of time after the event.

Physical symptoms may include loss of consciousness, confusion, disorientation, headache, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, fatigue, insomnia, increased sleepiness, dizziness, blurred vision, ear ringing, and sensitivity to loud sounds or bright lights.

Mental symptoms, such as forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, depression, suicidal thinking, anxiety, mood swings, and personality changes often develop as well.

It is critically important to seek medical help for moderate or severe brain injuries, which can be life-threatening.

In these situations, loss of consciousness, headaches, nausea, and vomiting may persist.

The patient may develop seizures, and one or both pupils may dilate. Symptoms like these present a medical emergency and getting proper professional help can save lives.
