Do You Need BRCA Screening?

By Tuesday, 03 July 2018 03:55 PM Current | Bio | Archive

I never recommend BRCA screening for breast cancer. The truth is, even if you have the BRCA gene, it is far from a sure thing you’ll get breast cancer.

The test only serves to scare people.

BRCA screening is an individual decision. If you want this test, get it. But make an informed decision after weighing your risks.

Don’t do it because a movie star did it or because your doctor is pressuring you into it.

The test entails a simple blood draw. It is usually covered by insurance, but if not, it is expensive, from about $500 to $2,000.
