Importance of Hormone Balance

Dr. Schwartz By Thursday, 05 April 2018 04:28 PM Current | Bio | Archive

I have been working with hormones in women — specifically bioidentical hormones, which are identical to human hormones — and hormones in men to help with sleep and many other issues for almost two decades.

Much of my professional life has been devoted to understanding hormones and their overarching roles in managing our health and preventing disease.

Yet many in our “advanced” society have little understanding or insight into the role of hormones in our lives.

When we are young, the abundance of perfectly balanced hormones makes us vivacious, powerful, sexually alive, quick to recover from minor illness, and able to sleep soundly.

But with age, our hormones and our youthful vigor begin to fade. Environmental toxins, over-processed foods, and sedentary lifestyles multiply the effect.

Not getting enough sleep compounds matters even further; you need 7-8 hours of sleep each night to optimize your body’s natural hormone production.

Proper use of hormone support can reverse or minimize the effects of aging. A correct balance of hormones works in harmony in the same way the many members of a symphony work together to create a beautiful piece of music.

This balance helps us remain healthy, vibrant, and beautiful as we age.

The best hormones are the ones produced by your own body. But when those begin to fade, the next best option is bioidentical hormones. These are the prescription medications estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid and adrenal support.

Bioidentical hormones are manufactured to be chemically identical to the hormones our bodies make when we are young.

These products can be found at drugstores in FDA-approved forms, or they can be personalized by compounding pharmacies that specialize in tailoring them your individual needs.

With hormones in balance, we enjoy many health benefits; one of the most important is experiencing restful sleep once again and feeling refreshed and alive each morning.

Bioidentical hormones are safe and they protect us from the effects of aging. They protect our bones, our hearts, our brains, and every organ and cell in our bodies.

By keeping our systems in balance, they help us sleep soundly and without disturbance. Doctors who deny these facts simply have not taken the time to educate themselves.

Hormones are not a miraculous “fountain of youth,” but all you have to do look at those who take them and compare them to their peers who don’t to understand that they are effective.

Everyone requires the proper combination of hormones to prevent disease, keep us young, functional and healthy, and reduce our healthcare costs. Those benefits alone should help you sleep better at night.

When I see patients for the first time, I ask them: If you didn’t know how old you are, how old would you think you are?

The answer from people on a proper program of hormones is always 20 years younger. From those who don’t take hormones, it’s always at least 20 years older. Which would you like to be?

Find a doctor who is experienced in working with bioidentical hormones and you will have taken an important step to better health.
