Question: Are spider veins caused by weak vessel walls, high blood pressure, or simply genetics? Will exercise help, or are there any diets or supplements that can address this condition? I’m also interested to know if new treatments are available for varicose veins other than stripping?
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
The tendency toward having spider veins appears to have a genetic base. No amount of exercise, dietary changes, or supplements will make any difference.
Old-fashioned vein stripping is radical and now we favor selective endoscopic vein excision in cases where saline ablation and laser management have not been successful. Scars are minimal and these procedures are much safer and more cosmetically appealing to most patients.
