Should I Get Shingles Vaccine?

Friday, 04 May 2012 09:16 AM

Question: I had a severe reaction to the flu shot and was told I likely have egg allergies. I had difficulty breathing and was very uncomfortable. I also am allergic to the antibiotic tetracycline. I am interested in getting the shingles vaccine, but should I risk it?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) clearly recommends against the shingles vaccine if one has ever had a life-threatening allergic reaction to gelatin, the antibiotic neomycin, or any other component of shingles vaccine. Have you been tested for these two allergies that you might have? Gelatin, like that found in Jell-O, is added to many vaccines as a heat stabilizer. In case of persons with existing and known allergies, all vaccines must be given under the supervision of a physician only.
