Why Did My Doctor Order PSA?

Friday, 20 Jul 2012 09:34 AM

Question: I’m a 68 year old man, in good health, and when I recently went to get a checkup my doctor ordered a PSA test. I thought they weren’t giving these tests anymore?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Professional organizations vary in their recommendations about who should — and who shouldn't — get a PSA screening test. While some have definitive guidelines, others leave the decision up to men and their doctors. Organizations that do recommend PSA screening generally encourage the test in men between the ages of 40 and 75, and in men with an increased risk of prostate cancer. For some men, knowing is better than not knowing. Having the test can provide you with a certain amount of reassurance — either that you probably don't have prostate cancer or that you do have it and can now have it treated. In contrast, PSA tests aren't foolproof. It is possible for your PSA levels to be elevated when cancer isn't present, and to not be elevated when cancer is present.
