Question: I am a diabetic and have developed neuropathy. The pain is usually in my toes, and I am now finding that the fingertips on my left hand appear to be losing sensation. Do you have any suggestions?
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
Neuropathy should be addressed aggressively. Diabetes can cause a condition called "microangiopathy" where the small capillaries become inflamed and blocked.
I suggest you see your physician for a review of your diabetic treatment to see if it can be improves. Also be sure no other localized issue is causing the symptoms in your left hand.
Appropriate imaging may be recommended. Your physician may also order a nerve evaluation, usually done supervised by a neurologist.
