Question: How can I tell if Alzheimer's is the cause of my husband's forgetfulness?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative disease characterized by various stages that may not be immediately self evident to close family.
Early Alzheimer's is characterized by forgetfulness and will progress unless treated. If you are concerned about forgetfulness with your husband, seek a specialist's opinion and do not try to diagnose him yourself.
Many other conditions cause memory loss, so seek a professional opinion and physical evaluation. Medical doctors have been trained to evaluate memory loss.
If you do not have a physician, call your local hospital for a listing of family physicians who are accepting new patients. If the memory loss is acute and recent, consider an ER evaluation to get the show on the road.
