Are Kidney Stones Hereditary?

By    |   Thursday, 03 October 2013 05:37 PM

Question: My brother gets kidney stones and I worry that I might, too. Are they hereditary? Also: What can I do to prevent them?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Yes, kidney stones are hereditary. You can prevent them by drinking a lot of water — at least eight, 8-ounce glasses daily — and avoiding dehydration. Alcohol should be kept to a minimum, as it is dehydrating.

Some people who get stones can benefit from being placed on preventive prescription medications. Always try to identify the stones you have by straining your urine after a pain episode, so your doctor can analyze what's in a stone.

Consult your doctor about all supplement and pills you use, since some may cause stones. All stone pain that lasts more than three days should be assessed for consideration of stone extraction or dissolution therapy.
