How Should I Treat My Goiter?

By    |   Friday, 03 October 2014 12:06 PM

Question: I have a goiter around my neck. Can you please explain what it is, and how can it be treated?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Goiters are caused by enlarged thyroid glands, which are seen as a neck fullness or mass. The thyroid gland secretes a thyroid hormone that regulates our metabolism. This gland may enlarge related to conditions that cause under- and over-active thyroid function, a tumor, an autoimmune disorder, or even cancer.
You need to see your physician for a thyroid evaluation. This will usually include a blood test for TSH and and an ultrasound or thyroid scan. Treatment may involve medication, surgery, or both, depending upon the results of blood tests and imaging. The longer treatment for goiter is delayed the harder it is to manage.
