Are There Drug-Free Treatments for Knee Pain?

By    |   Wednesday, 17 June 2015 12:02 PM EDT

Question: I've been getting pains in my knees. Can I take anything that will help, other than painkillers? Fish oil supplements, glucosamine?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Overuse injuries of the knee are very common in runners. Most of these relate to tendon, ligament, and fascial strains that all heal well with rest, and sometimes a short period of crutches use helps it heal faster.

Recurrent pain usually suggests an underlying problem that should be addressed. Although a ligament tear may account for this, it is unlikely because the discomfort is usually constant with tears. Perhaps you have a mild bursitis or cyst or even an early form of arthritis?

In any event an MRI will help define your problem if a physical examination does not reveal the cause. Start with holding off your running regiment for five to seven days, then re-introduce your routine slowly.

If the pain comes back, it should be evaluated by your physician just to be sure nothing harmful — such as a bone tumor or other destructive process — is occurring. Avoid medication use until the cause is found and use as directed. Topical treatments such as Zostrix help some people, but there is no real of any benefits to the treatments you mention.

Many find that whirlpool baths and massage provide useful tools to aid in easing discomfort for recurring pain. Warm packs alternating with cool packs may provide symptom relief, too, but clearly you should investigate to identify the cause of your pain.
