Don't Take Cipro for Staph

Friday, 13 January 2012 09:19 AM

Question: I just had the powerful antibiotic Cipro prescribed to me for a staph infection. I am an 80-year-old man and I worry about the side effects of this drug. Is there an alternative?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

Cipro is not usually used for staph infections, as staph rapidly induces a resistance to Cipro. There are better medications to use. I would ask for alternative choices if Cipro is prescribed for staph.
