Can Birth Control Shots Have Lasting Side Effects?

By    |   Wednesday, 29 May 2013 04:29 PM

Question: After receiving a Depo-Provera shot several years ago I felt like I had the worst flu in my life. Now, I still feel don’t feel well. I have gained weight, feel fatigued, and had some hair loss. Could this be caused by the birth control shot, and is there anything I can do about it?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

This is an unusual side effect and is more likely due to something other than your progesterone shot.

Fatigue and hair loss are not usual side effects from Depo-Provera shots. It sounds like it’s time to have a physical evaluation with an emphasis on your thyroid and endocrine system.

Avoid wasting time and effort on self-diagnosis. Testing is so comprehensive now, answers are usually available very quickly. We always worry about malignancy, tumors, infectious, and inflammatory internal conditions with the kinds of symptoms you describe, so you should seek out a doctor’s evaluation.
