Should I Take Daily Baby Aspirin?

Tuesday, 25 June 2013 09:54 AM EDT

Question: I’ve read that aspirin can prevent cancer and heart disease. Should I take a daily baby aspirin?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

Most likely yes, especially if you are male, over 40 with a family history of heart disease, and don’t have an ulcer, bleeding disorder, allergies, or other condition that may worsen with aspirin use.

Editor's Note:Knowing these 5 cancer-causing signs is crucial to remaining cancer-free for life
Daily aspirin intake — as in a low-dose as in 81-mg baby aspirin — is associated with a decrease risk of colorectal carcinoma. In addition, this dose can prevent heart attack and stroke. For some unknown reason, aspirin preventive treatment seems more effective in men than women. We do not see the same benefits in women as men, so regular aspirin intake should be always discussed with your doctor first.

Daily aspirin use for those over the age of 40, especially men, may be a very good idea, but must be considered in light of a particular patient’s health risks and profile. Excess alcohol intake, hepatitis, blood disorders, gastritis, ulcers, bleeding problems, or the use of blood thinners can all negate any benefits of taking aspirin. Some health problems may also worsen with daily aspirin use.

So consult your doctor first to see if aspirin therapy is wise for you.
