How Do I Lower My Blood Pressure?

Thursday, 08 July 2010 11:22 AM

Question: When my blood pressure got to 203/106, I was put on Micardis HCT 40mg/12.5. It brings it down some but goes back up at night, so I am taking a half dose at night which has helped some. I was taking Ginkgo biloba until the doctor told me not to. Do you have any advice?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Ginkgo often elevates blood pressure, so your doctor was correct in telling you to avoid taking it. Micardis HCT is a combination of an ARB (angiotensin receptor blocker) and a diuretic (water pill) and should only be taken once a day
Failure to achieve better control over your blood pressure will place you at increased risk for stroke, myocardial infarction and renal failure. It is highly likely you need additional medication now, as your BP target should be 140/80, a far cry from 203/106. Go back to your doctor for re-assessment, additional treatment and referral to a nephrologist for further evaluation if your pressure resists correction.
