Question: I recently went in for my annual exam and my doctor said he was going to skip the PSA test for prostate cancer because of new guidelines. But my insurance still pays for it. Should I insist that I get this test since it doesn’t cost me anything?
Dr. Cwynar's answer:
Yes, you should get the test. The guidelines have been changing over the past year and the PSA screening has becoming controversial. Many men have been getting unnecessary procedures based on the results of the test. But I believe it's always best to know where you stand and then make an educated decision on what to do about it. You may be opening a pandoras box but it's always better to know what's inside your body than to not know.
