Question: I recently went in for my annual exam and my doctor said he was going to skip the PSA test for prostate cancer because of new guidelines. But my insurance still pays for it. Should I insist that I get this test since it doesn’t cost me anything?
Dr. Cwynar's answer:
Yes, I believe you should get the test. The guidelines have been changing over the past year. Many men have been getting unnecessary procedures based on the past stricter guidelines, however I believe its always best to know where you stand and then make an educated decision on what to do in the future about it. The PSA has the potential to open a pandoras box if you are not careful, but it is better to have information than to not have it.
