Don't Dye Hair While Pregnant

Tuesday, 11 December 2012 09:24 AM EST

Question: I am a 37-year-old woman trying for my first baby. I normally dye my hair a darker shade. Should I discontinue this during my pregnancy? I’ve heard conflicting advice.

Dr. Cwynar's answer:
When it comes to babies I'm a purist. Different products contain different ingredients. Even when hair systems say they are organically based there is still a risk of toxicity to the fetus and these are not as well controlled by any drug-enforcing agency. My rule of thumb is NOT to get hair colored while pregnant nor while nursing.
