The Right Dosage of Vitamin D

Thursday, 01 November 2012 08:45 AM EDT

Question: I want to start taking vitamin D because I live in Pennsylvania and don’t often get enough sun. I’m a 65-year-old man in good health. What is the right dosage of the vitamin to take?

Dr. Cwynar's answer:
The FDA recently increased its recommendation for vitamin D to 5,000 IUs daily. This is the dose I give most of my patients initially. I like the combination of vitamin D with vitamin K, which helps with absorption. Vitamin D and K combination capsules are sold by many supplement makers.
