Always Have a Medical Advocate

A hospital is not a place where you should be left to fend for yourself. You are at a disadvantage. You may be in pain or just not able to cope with the situation the way you would normally.

Remember that understaffing is a problem. And it’s getting worse. That’s why you need an extra pair of eyes and hands. This is where an advocate comes in — usually a patient’s spouse or adult child, but it can also be a loved one or trusted friend.

Your advocate will look out for you, making sure, for instance, that the medications you’re given were actually ordered, and that you receive the right tests.

It’s important to have someone with you as much as possible, including overnight. If you are in the ICU, you won’t be allowed to have someone stay with you all night, but if you are in a regular room you can often make arrangements to have overnight company.

I strongly recommend doing so.
