How I Switched to Holistic Medicine

When I started practicing medicine in 1992 I was a conventionally trained physician doing what I was taught in medical school — which involved mostly prescribing medications to treat the symptoms of illness.

After about six months of practicing conventional medicine, I started feeling uneasy about what I was doing. I realized that I wasn’t treating the causes of my patients’ illnesses.

Worse yet, the drug therapies themselves were leading to many health problems associated with adverse side effects.

I just didn’t feel like I was helping my patients by prescribing all those drugs.

Then my father’s heart disease came to a head. He had a long history of the disease, having suffered two heart attacks, two coronary artery bypasses, and a number of angioplasties.

When I began practicing medicine, he was on a dozen medications for heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and atrial fibrillation.

But even with all that “treatment,” my father didn’t look well. He looked pale and pasty. His 25-year history of angina — chest pain related to heart disease — was getting worse.

I thought my father was going to die at any moment.

Then a patient gave me a book called Healing With Nutrition, by an allopathic physician named Dr. Jonathan Wright. The term allopathy means “other than the disease,” referring to a type of therapy that treats health comprehensively rather than focusing solely on the symptoms of disease.

After I read that book, I began trying a few natural therapies on my father. The first two were natural thyroid hormone and natural, bioidentical testosterone injections.

His condition improved immediately. The angina stopped on day seven of the natural therapies, and his cholesterol level — which had been stuck in the 300s for at least a decade — fell below 200 mg/dL without him even changing his bad habits.

Most importantly, he no longer looked like he was going to die at any moment.

Once I saw the changes in my father, I knew that I wanted to learn how to utilize holistic medicine in my practice.

From that moment on, I began reading books and articles on natural therapies, and going to meetings about holistic medicine.

Since then, I have been to hundreds of holistic health conferences, where I learn about what’s new in the field, and more importantly, what’s working for other practitioners and their patients.
