Fall-Related Deaths Increasing

David Brownstein, M.D. By Tuesday, 27 July 2021 04:35 PM EDT Current | Bio | Archive

From 2007 to 2016, the number of U.S. elderly who died as the result of falls increased by 31 percent. From 2000 to 2006, there had been a 42 percent increase.

The 2018 CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report recommended healthcare professionals educate the elderly about fall protection, and take measures such as ensuring that walking areas are free of debris.

One thing driving this large increase since 2000 may be the overmedication of older people. Whenever I see an elderly patient taking multiple drugs, the first thing I want to do is determine if all of the medications are necessary.

Almost every time, I am able to significantly lower the numbers and doses of the medications being prescribed.

The more medications an elderly patient takes, the more likely he or she will suffer side effects such as a fall.

I suggest working with a holistic healthcare provider who can help you make a good decision about whether a particular drug therapy is appropriate or not.
