Doctors are overwhelmed by the number of prescription medications on the market. There simply are too many for anyone to understand what they all do.
The sheer volume of medications has lead to more and more drug interactions that are not in the patient’s best interest.
Whenever I see a patient — especially an elderly patient — who is taking numerous medications, the first thing I do is try to ascertain if there are negative interactions going on, or if there are multiple medications from the same class of drugs being prescribed at once.
Then we try to determine what is essential and winnow out what can be discarded.
It’s up to you to decide what medications you will take. That’s why you need to take an active role in your healthcare decisions.
The patients who get the best results are the active patients — the ones that read about what they are prescribed and ask the right questions.
