Four Immunity Enhancers

1. Diet is critical. A wide variety of nutrient-dense vegetables — including cruciferous vegetables, garlic, shallots, and greens — supply the minerals, vitamins, and phytochemicals that are essential for optimal immune function. Some fruits, especially berries, are important but should not be eaten in excess as they contain high levels of sugar (fructose).

2. Omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, play a positive role in immune function. However, an excess of the EPA component can actually suppress immunity. Combining omega-3 oil with arginine has been shown to significantly boost cellular immunity and to reduce hospital stays for high-risk patients in the critical care unit.

3. Quality sleep and avoiding excessive stress — especially prolonged, unrelieved stress — will enhance immunity. Melatonin improves sleep, stimulates brain antioxidant enzymes, and boosts cellular immunity.

4. Get regular, moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes five days a week. Resistance exercises should be included to build muscle and strengthen bones and ligaments. If you opt for more vigorous exercise, it should be accompanied by a mix of antioxidants.
