Should I Take L-glutamine?

Tuesday, 21 February 2012 08:09 AM

Question: I take 5 mg of L-glutamine daily with 25 grams of whey protein. Is the L-glutamine the same as the glutamine you mentioned in the September 2011 issue of the Blaylock Wellness Report? If so, should I be taking it?

Dr. Blaylock's Answer:

Yes, the glutamine you are taking is the same I mentioned. I do not recommend supplementing with glutamine because it is converted to the excitotoxin glutamate and has been shown to worsen certain neurodegenerative diseases. Though it has become a popular supplement for gastrointestinal repair, many studies do not support this indication.

Pyruvate is superior in gut repair and is safe. It also protects the brain against excitotoxicity, while whey protein contains high levels of glutamate and could worsen excitotoxicity.
