You may have never heard of the carnitines, acetyl-L-carnitine and L-carnitine, but they are critical to your health. In fact, they offer amazing health benefits that work just as well as the chemical-based pharmaceuticals your physician bombards you with. The carnitines can help with everything from Alzheimer’s to erectile dysfunction.
The ways the carnitines improve your health include:
• Brain. The carnitines enter the brain very easily and can stabilize cell membranes, making them soft (this reaction is called fluidity). One of the problems with aging is that the cell membranes get stiff and begin to function poorly.
Acetyl-L-carnitine can improve the function of nerve growth factor, which helps to repair the brain’s cells and connections (synapses). This can be especially important for people with disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s or brain injuries and strokes.
Acetyl-L-carnitine can also improve some of the cognitive problems associated with Alzheimer’s disease — including memory, personal care problems and depression. When combined with supplements like alpha-lipoic acid, vitamins E and C, CoQ10 and multivitamins, the deterioration can be slowed.
One of the more exciting combinations includes acetyl-L-carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid. Together, they have been shown to not only slow the aging of the brain — they can reverse it as well. • Heart. Some tests have shown that carnitine supplementation leads to significant improvement in heart function and tolerance to exercise. In treating patients with angina, excellent results have been reported from a number of placebo-controlled crossover studies.
There is also evidence that carnitine can improve circulation in the legs of patients with severe atherosclerosis of their blood vessels. Go here for more information on how to protect your heart.
• Bones. L-carnitine can stimulate bone cells to produce more bone. Carnitine does this by stimulating bone-building cells (known as osteoblasts). I would say that L-carnitine should be added to the diet of those fighting osteoporosis.
• Erectile dysfunction. A carefully executed study of men over age 66 — in which testosterone was compared to L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine — found that the carnitines worked
better than testosterone at increasing erectile function, reducing depression, diminishing fatigue and increasing nocturnal erections. The big plus was that, while testosterone enlarged the prostate, the carnitines did not.
