Lack of Sleep Drives Overeating: Study

Lack of sleep has been shown to drive overeating, and may be a significant factor in the nation’s every-expanding waistline, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The findings, published in the Journal of Health Psychology suggests that disrupted sleep can start a chain of events tied to a number of obesity-related chronic health conditions in adults and children.

"It is well recognized that food intake is implicated in many chronic health issues including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, and diet is often a target of treatment to prevent the onset of these conditions," noted researchers Alyssa Lundahl and Timothy D Nelson.

"Understanding the mechanisms linking disrupted sleep patterns to increased food intake is important for informing both prevention and treatment interventions for chronic health conditions."

Food intake is driven by biological, emotional, cognitive, and environmental factors, the researchers noted. But Lundahl and Nelson argue that eating habits are heavily altered and influenced by sleep patterns, based on their research.

For example, after a bad night's sleep, hormones that control appetite are affected, emotional stress is greater, which leads to increased food cravings to compensate for lack of energy.

"Health psychologists should be mindful of the link between sleep and eating, and sleep should be actively considered in efforts to modify dietary behavior," they concluded.
