Raisins Are Laden With Pesticides

Every year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases its annual ranking of the produce items with the highest amount of pesticide residue — the Dirty Dozen — and those with the least — the Clean Fifteen. The group says nearly 70% of the fresh produce found in the U.S. contains potentially harmful chemical pesticides, but this year's dirtiest produce commodity turns out not to be a fresh fruit or vegetable but a dried one — raisins.

According to the EWG, almost every sample of non-organic raisins tested — 99% — had residues of at least two pesticides. Surprisingly, a full 91% of organic raisins had the same results. This is the first year the EWG included raisins in its annual Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce. Their data comes from the result of tests conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Dried prunes were also tested by the USDA and they turned out to be much cleaner, which means that not all dried fruit can have the same levels of pesticide, says EWG.

While the lists are helpful to know which fruits and vegetables are the most pesticide-free, the EWG doesn't want to scare anyone away from eating these healthy foods, especially in these turbulent times involving the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a press release from the group:

"There is no evidence people can be exposed to COVID-19 through food. That is why, even though the risks of COVID-19 are serious, consumers should continue eating plenty of healthy fruits and vegetables."

In the case of raisins, the organization suggests opting for fresh fruit or vegetables rather than eating raisins. Here are links to the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen.
