Music Makes Exercise Feel Easier: Study

You might want to grab your iPod before hitting the gym. New research shows that listening to your favorite songs while exercising makes the workout feel less strenuous.
The study — led by Matthew Stork, a graduate student at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario — found that volunteers who listened to music were able to exercise harder and enjoyed it more, The New York Times reports.
The findings, published in the journal Medicine & Sports & Exercise, suggest music may nudge people into pushing themselves harder than they had thought possible.
Many past studies have found that listening to music changes people’s experience of exercise, with most people reporting that listening to energetic songs make a workout feel easier and less monotonous.
But most of those studies have generally involved standard endurance exercise, such as 30 minutes or so of continuous jogging or cycling. The new research examined the effect that music has during what is called high intensity-interval training.
