Pork OK for DASH Dieters, Study Finds

People following the DASH-style eating plan to lower their blood pressure can add pork to their menus, but should hold off on bacon, a new study finds.

The DASH diet, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension is a government-promoted eating plan that stresses fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It substitutes chicken or fish for red meat and is low in saturated fat and sodium.

Purdue University researchers found that when lean pork was part of the DASH diet, study participants were able to lower their blood pressure effectively after six weeks. There were no differences in responses between DASH with chicken and fish, and DASH with pork, the researchers found.

Scientists warned that for pork to be part of an effective DASH diet, it must be served in appropriate portions – in this case, three ounces for lunch or dinner and also that it be lean and unprocessed, which would out products like bacon, hot dogs, and ham.
