Americans believe their greatest health care challenge is cancer, a new survey finds.

Cancer topped the list, followed by obesity, neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; diabetes and heart disease.  Also, while Zika and Ebola grab media attention, the survey respondents were least concerned about these infectious disease, as well as HIV/AIDs.

The survey, called the National Health Checkup, first launched this past January and provides a quick pulse on consumer health opinions and behaviors several times throughout the year. It is conducted by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

In terms of progress, most respondents believe that the most strides are being made in treating heart disease (83 percent), and the least in obesity (52 percent). With cancer, at least three-quarters believed some progress was being made. However, black and Hispanic respondents were twice as likely as white respondents to say that progress is being made with obesity.

Regarding cancer, the survey also asked the respondents which they believed was the ‘scariest’ form of the disease. They ranked brain cancer the ‘scariest cancer’; colon and skin cancers ’least scary’

The largest percentage of the respondent chose brain cancer as the "scariest." That, and the others, were ranked as follows:

  • Brain (38 percent)
  • Pancreatic (20 percent)
  • Lung (10 percent)
  • Breast (8 percent)
  • Prostate (7 percent)
  • Colon (5 percent)
  • Skin (5 percent)

“A cancer diagnosis is scary for anyone, no matter the type,” says Dr. John T. Wald, of the Mayo Clinic.  The positive thing is that early detection and treatment can significantly improve patient outcomes, and we have excellent screenings for many of these cancers. Today, the five-year survival rate for all breast cancers is 91 percent – in large part because of early detection and advances in treatment.”

The survey, which was taken in July, involved about 1,000 people from across the U.S.
