Emotions Cloud Prostate Cancer Decision-Making: Study

A prostate cancer diagnosis can understandably lead to distress, but in some men it is so traumatizing that they are unable to make appropriate decisions about treatment, a new study finds.

Prostate cancer patients generally experience feelings of depression and anxiety upon diagnosis, but such emotional problems often subside after treatment, doctors say.

But in a quarter to a third of patients, emotional problems can settle in long term and interfere with a patient’s decision-making, say researchers at the University of Buffalo and Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

They decided to study what personality traits and beliefs might result in such emotional problems, so they looked at 1,425 men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer.

They identified the following personality traits: lack of confidence in deciding how to treat the cancer, feeling that one’s masculinity is under threat, and tendencies to be less optimistic and resilient.

They also performed a second study on 1,050 men with localized prostate cancer and found those who experienced more distress were more apt to choose surgery even when a less aggressive treatment might be more appropriate.

Counseling after diagnosis might help prevent emotional problems, the researchers said.
