Personalized Vaccines Promise Dramatic Results Against Ovarian Cancer

Researchers have developed personalized ovarian cancer vaccines they say could offer tailored, effective treatments for patients.

The technique, developed at the University of Connecticut, targets protein mutations in cancer cells — called epitopes — that the immune system can use to identify and destroy tumors.

Test vaccines that use the technique were show to be effective in laboratory experiments involving mice. Now researchers will test the vaccines in human clinical trials.

"This has the potential to dramatically change how we treat cancer," said Pramod Srivastava, M.D., director of the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at UConn Health and one of the principal investigators on the study.

"This research will serve as the basis for the first ever genomics-driven personalized medicine clinical trial in immunotherapy of ovarian cancer, and will begin at UConn Health this fall."

The researchers, who published their findings in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, said they may be able to tell within two years or so whether the vaccine is effective in cancer patients.

Theoretically, the approach could also be refined to work against other cancers, although the research has yet to be done, they added.
