Better Than Biopsy: Blood Test Could be Cancer Game-Changer

By    |   Monday, 20 April 2015 04:31 PM

Scientific researchers in labs across the country are testing "liquid biopsies" — experimental blood tests that hold the promise of identifying cancer DNA in ways that are equal to (or better than) surgical biopsies or even CT scans.

The hope is that a simple blood test could be a game-changer in diagnosing and treating cancer, and enable oncologists to determine whether a treatment is working, The New York Times reports.

Failing treatments could be abandoned quickly, sparing patients grueling side effects and allowing doctors to try alternatives.

“This could change forever the way we follow up not only response to treatments but also the emergence of resistance, and down the line could even be used for really early diagnosis,” said José Baselga, M.D., chief medical officer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

To date, only small studies of such tests have been done, involving lung, colon, and blood cancer. But early results are encouraging.

A National Cancer Institute study published this month in The Lancet Oncology found such tests predicted recurrences of the most common form of lymphoma more than three months before they were noticeable on CT scans.
