A new immunotherapy vaccine has shown promise in treating two advanced melanoma skin cancer patients, one of whom has been declared cancer-free.

Eight to 12 years after their melanoma spread to their livers, the two patients have survived due to the vaccine engineered from their own dendritic cells to activate the immune system to fight their tumors, according to the researchers.

The study, reported in the journal Cancer Biotherapy and Radiopharmaceuticals, suggests the vaccine may offer an innovative new way to treat the often-fatal from of the disease.

Dr. Robert Dillman, and his colleagues at the Hoag Cancer Institute who conducted the work, said the vaccine could help cancer patients achieve long term survival by keeping the disease in check.

The study notes that so-called patient-specific therapeutic vaccine eltrapuldencel-t vaccine halted the progression of cancer in one patient for 4.5 years, while another has remained cancer-free for over 12 years.

"These exciting results illustrate the potential for melanoma patient-specific therapeutic vaccines to enhance long-term survival and add to the progress being made on the immunotherapy of melanoma," said Dr. Donald J. Buchsbaum, co-editor-in-chief of Cancer Biotherapy and Radiopharmaceuticals.
