New Early Lung Cancer Test Developed

French researchers have determined it is possible to detect signs of lung cancer months or even years before CT scans can confirm the life-threatening condition.

A team of scientists from the French research institute Inserm said the findings pave the way for a new test could be developed to track circulating cancer cells long before symptoms or other signs are evident several months, and in some cases several years, before the cancer becomes detectable by CT

Lead researcher Paul Hofman reported in the Public Library of Science journal Plos One, said the discovery suggests identifying the cancer cells could give doctors an early warning that could allow doctors to remove tumors early through surgery, eradicating the cancer and saving lives.

The research, involving animals and cancer patients, has shown tat invasive tumors shed cancer cells into the bloodstream from the very earliest stages of their formation, even before they are detectable by diagnostic imaging. The possibility of identifying these “sentinel” cells is considered a major asset in the race against time for the early detection, and treatment, of cancer.

Lung cancer is one of the most lethal cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, one-year survival among patients is 44 percent, and 5-year survival only 16 percent.
